Traditionally Creepy Turnips

This is the first in a series of photos I have taken of this year's Jack O' Lanterns: The Terrifying Turnip Trio!

Why turnips, you ask?

Why, because they're traditional, of course!

Also, they're gnarly, creepy, & fun-sized little globs of horror.

Look at them. They look like shrunken heads! No wonder they were so popular in Ireland. Pumpkins may be the face & emblem of Halloween, but the turnip is a classic nod to the real spirit of the holiday.

I carved these little guys by first cutting off the bottoms to make them not so wobbly, then scooped their insides out with a melon baller. Used a pencil to gouge out my designs on the skin, then used a pumpkin saw to carve it out. The insides also doubled as a delicious side-dish.

I hope that my unique creations catch the attention of DeviantArt, & I get a prize for originality!

EDIT: Well, poop. My turnips didn't even get an honorable mention, & as expected, the winning pumpkins were explicitly DeviantArt-themed. How predictable. Ah well, I know my creepy turnips are popular with my small group of watchers & D.A. friends - & that means quite a lot to me. Thank you for your kind support.
